Architects must adhere to local building codes and regulations related to fire safety when designing structures. These codes specify requirements for fire resistance, means of egress, fire detection and alarm systems, fire suppression systems, and other fire protection measures.
Passive fire protection measures are built into the structure of the building and help contain the spread of fire and smoke. Examples include fire-rated walls, floors, and doors; compartmentalization to prevent fire spread between areas; and fire-resistant materials used in construction.
Active fire protection systems are designed to detect, control, and suppress fires. This includes fire detection and alarm systems, which alert occupants to the presence of fire, as well as fire suppression systems such as sprinklers, fire extinguishers, and fire hoses.
